International Women's Day

Today I would like to thank the many women in my life that have fought to create better opportunities not only for themselves but for others as well.

I think of my great grandmother Luz Silva who was one of the first women who was able to attend college in Mexico. She studied history and set a high standard for our family. My grandmother Carmelita, who became a widow at a very young age, had to work hard to support her three children despite gender stereotypes that she couldn't do it without a man. My mother Ana who is a business woman that not only disproves gender stereotypes but also gives back to her community to create a socially responsible business. My sisters Guerthy and Astrid who are paving the way in their fields and with their families. My aunts, cousins, and close friends who also make a diffefence in their respective fields.

There are also great men who have provided support and guidance to the women in their lives. My great grandfather David who made sure the men that married his daughters would support their individuality and freedom rather than lock them inside a home. My mother's father Mariano who let my mom sing on top of tables at restaurants giving her the power of her voice (she isn't a singer, but rather an outspoken woman). My uncles, cousins and friends who continue supporting the women in their lives.

Today is a great day for women, and as we look back at the women who gave everything to give us what we have today, we must also consider how we will continue the journey to equality. There is still a lot to be done. We have a lot to celebrate today, but we must not lose sight of what lies ahead.
